Be sure to keep up with the progress of my 2011 FC RX-7 build for the XDC tour, and other misc PRO-AM events across the US @ facebook.com/driftfcbuckey

Over the next few days i’ll attempt to get the hang of this site, and make some interesting posts, but for now, i’ll explain a little bit about myself, and what i do.

My name is Mike Laing, I’m 20yrs old. I adopted the nickname  “Buckey” when i was younger in my BMX days, and it’s stuck with me ever since. The most significant reason being i somehow always seem to get trapped in a room with more than 1 Mike…. I live in Las Vegas, Nevada, and I’m working my way up through the FormulaDrift Pro-Am ranks to get issued my own FormulaD license to compete with the pros. Through the 2010 VegasDrift Pro-Am series i managed to lock down 3rd overall in points after a few unfortunate mishaps (previously was 1st overall) and was issued an invitation to the 2010 FormulaDrift Nationals at Toyota Speedway in IrwinDale, California. It will take place during round 7 of FormulaD.

I’m currently driving an ’87 Mazda RX-7 Turbo. Both myself and my FC have come along way this season!! From tons of seat time, and breaking fresh BNsports aero – wall grazing, to blowing up 2 motors, one of which was 2 nights before vegasdrift pro-am RD. 3.  Thanks to Area-77′s Steve Singh, and the sacrifice of sleep on both of our parts we managed to get it back in, and running, showing up to tech inspection an hour and a half late missing practice for the most part…. The sleep deprivation  weighed heavily on me, and in qualifying the first run i slammed the Krail hard, basically handing away the points race (i was points leader going into rd.3).  I bent the car up pretty bad, breaking my electric fan off, and bending some suspension components. However, that didnt stop me. I immediately jacked it up, and threw a jackstand under the bent toe arm, and slammed the car down on it by releasing the jack. straightening it out pretty good. I managed to qualify 11th overall thanks to my second pass. Due to the amount of cars breaking, and not being able to compete, the format switched to a top 8, leaving me to go watch from the stands…. To some, 11th would be good considering the circumstances, however i’m VERY competitive, and it simply wasn’t sufficient enough for me… Rotaries, drifting, sleepless nights working non stop to put on a goodshow = Krail disaster… Lesson Learned! haha

Stay tuned, as i will be posting updates as i prep for FD Nationals next month!

See you at Nationals!!!
